Description
The premise that drives The Drawn Out Network was seeded during the first UAL / RMIT drawing conference held in Melbourne during March 2010. This conference was initiated as a means of exploring cross disciplinary approaches to drawing. It resulted in the organizers wanting to better understand drawings’ relationship with writing and notation; knowledge that we expect will help us in establishing drawings’ position as an active component of general literacy.
With drawing established in the minds of the organizers as the tangible bridge between textural and non textural communication our collaboration has resolved to develop a network of interested parties.
Working with the assumption that drawing is not simply a way of thinking and communicating but an integral part of our everyday and professional lives DRAWING OUT: 2012 will address, how drawing functions as a part of literacy through three themes;
1. Drawing and Notation. Drawing as a sometimes intuitive other times driven by convention means of mapping appearance and movement . With special reference to innovative methods of notation .
2. Drawing as Writing Drawing after, before and as a part of writing. An exploration of literacy and communication.
3. Drawing: recording and discovery. Drawing as a speculative activity and means of holding and transferring information.

Production Line is a performance that attempts to show how the people, jobs and processes that make up Bristol Diving School can be arranged in time.
Each person is assigned a discreet action to perform on a given piece of material. This action is individual to the person carrying it out. Conversely, the material is shared between all actors taking part in the process. These isolated actions on the material, in proper sequence, will result in the production of a sculpture that does not have an individual owner. What is produced is only fully owned by the brand.
This is a very literal interpretation of the group manifesto used in the conception of the Diving School itself which, serves the purpose of pronouncing our intent to produce work in a way that allows the development of new ways of working together.
Inland is a gallery and studio space set up by 5 Chelsea College of Art and Design BA Fine Art alumni – Lauren Houlton, Keira Greene, Benji Jeffrey, Bella Marin and Alice Mendelowitz.
Award winning design and communications agency SAS (part of MSLGROUP) are launching a £10,000 scholarship programme at Chelsea College of Art and Design, to recognise creative excellence and nurture emerging talent.
The company has created three scholarships totalling £10,000 for students on Chelsea’s BA Graphic Design Communication course. The scholarships will be open to all second year BA Graphic Design Communication students.
Students that wish to apply will be asked to complete a live project in their second year with three winning students being chosen to receive a Scholarship for the final year of their undergraduate degree.
Geoff Thomas Shaw, Chelsea’s Undergraduate Programme Director, hopes that this collaboration with SAS “ensures our new, young designers are more financially confident and feel valued as the next generation of professional practitioners”.
David Stocks, Executive Creative Director at SAS said: “It’s tough for students with the cost of study rising all the time. We believe there is a responsibility on agencies to support and nurture young talent and not just use new graduates as lowly paid interns. The great reputation for creativity that we have in this country will only continue with the support of our industry”.

The Bar-Tur Award is now open for submissions.
University of the Arts London (UAL) is pleased to launch the 2012 Bar-Tur Award. The award was established in 2011 in memory of Ann Lesley Bar-Tur (1947-1984). BOOKING ESSENTIAL!
BA Graphic Design Communication at Chelsea College of Art and Design are currently involved in a collaborative project with the Sky Arts network. Six of our stage three students were outright winners of a national competition: ’15 minutes of fame can start with 20 seconds on Sky Arts’. Students responded to a brief that required the realisation of their perception of ‘the Arts’ as a professional broadcast moving image sting.
You can read more on the following blog entry.
The entries from Chelsea went far beyond Sky’s expectations and as a consequence the students each worked, as graduates at Sky Studios, directing film crews and editors up to the point where their work was broadcast live on 20 February 2012 and stings are now regularly streaming throughout the Arts channel.
