Template Collaboration at Front Room Gallery

Jack Featherstone & Max Parsons Front Room Gallery ShowJack Featherstone & Max Parsons Front Room Gallery Show

Back in April two Chelsea College of Art and Design BA Graphic Design Communication alumni; Jack Featherstone and Max Parsons worked on a collaborative exhibition entitled “Template” at the Front Room Gallery in Cambridge.

The exhibition centred around a “space specific, hand painted, wall drawing which was digitally designed to the exact proportions of the room. This drawing was accompanied by three individual risograph print compositions, which played with the same scale and grid forms that were used to create the wall drawing.”

If you are interested in buying one of the limited edition prints head over to the Front Room Esty shop.

SAS Scholarships for New Design Talent

SAS logo

Award winning design and communications agency SAS (part of MSLGROUP) are launching a £10,000 scholarship programme at Chelsea College of Art and Design, to recognise creative excellence and nurture emerging talent.

The company has created three scholarships totalling £10,000 for students on Chelsea’s BA Graphic Design Communication course. The scholarships will be open to all second year BA Graphic Design Communication students.

Students that wish to apply will be asked to complete a live project in their second year with three winning students being chosen to receive a Scholarship for the final year of their undergraduate degree.

Geoff Thomas Shaw, Chelsea’s Undergraduate Programme Director, hopes that this collaboration with SAS “ensures our new, young designers are more financially confident and feel valued as the next generation of professional practitioners”.

David Stocks, Executive Creative Director at SAS said: “It’s tough for students with the cost of study rising all the time. We believe there is a responsibility on agencies to support and nurture young talent and not just use new graduates as lowly paid interns. The great reputation for creativity that we have in this country will only continue with the support of our industry”.

Sky Arts Sting Success

BA Graphic Design Communication at Chelsea College of Art and Design are currently involved in a collaborative project with the Sky Arts network. Six of our stage three students were outright  winners of a national competition: ’15 minutes of fame can start with 20 seconds on Sky Arts’. Students responded to a brief that required the realisation of their perception of ‘the Arts’ as a professional broadcast moving image sting.

You can read more on the following blog entry.

The entries from Chelsea went far beyond Sky’s expectations and as a consequence the students each worked, as graduates at Sky Studios, directing film crews and editors up to the point where their work was broadcast live on 20 February 2012 and stings are now regularly streaming throughout the Arts channel.

The following is a mini-documentary on the making of the movie: What goes into making a sting?

Suture – Textile alumni at the Foundry Gallery

BA Textiles alumni Jennifer Rose will be exhibiting at the Foundry Gallery early next year with a show called Suture.

Private view: January 12th 6.30-9.00pm
Exhibition continues: January 13th – February 28th

Jennifer Rose Norris’s Textile Designs take inspiration from bone formations combined with deconstructed flower buds. The process uses stitching, fabric manipulation and a range of cutting techniques to transform long flat pieces of material into structural forms.

Her work reflects the qualities that are represented in today’s urban landscapes, through the friction of architectural surroundings and nature’s constant presence.  She therefore chooses a range of natural and synthetic fabrics to work with, which allows her work to demonstrate the contrast found between the materials used as harsh and angular in appearance while remaining soft and tactile in texture.

The designs reflect how textiles can be used sculpturally with a space and also as an extension of the body as a fashion piece or adornment.

Jennifer Rose Norris is a Textile Designer and a recent graduate from the Chelsea College of Art and Design. She is currently exhibiting at the Foundry Gallery, Chelsea. She lives and works in London.

Consume Peckham

Consume Peckham proudly presents its third edition, co-ordinated by Kieron Dennis. This year sixteen short films have been made by Stage 2 Graphic Design Communication students from Chelsea.

Subjects include an evangelical church, a dog grooming salon, and a Christmas decoration company. Together they reflect the diversity of commercial activity in Peckham. The documentaries also reveal the resilience of a community tested by recent riots and budget cuts and shows how Peckham supports, inspires and provides chances for its young residents.

Consume Peckham presents a truly authentic portrait of the varied and occasionally bizarre cultural mix that is to be found in South London’s most infamous postcode.
